Fresh May 18

This week at the market expect several lettuce varieties, arugula, kale and other greens, kohlrabi, beets, turnips, spring onions, radishes, pecans, and sweet potatoes. Spinach is winding down. Limited amounts of early potatoes, green beans, broccoli, cabbage, zucchini, and carrots may be available.

The produce selection will broaden as spring temperatures become warmer and move further away from the recent freezes that affected some of our farmers. Those late low temperatures killed some early plantings which had to be replanted and/or slowed growth of summer produce. Peaches, for example, will be arriving later than usual. The cool temps also lengthened the season for some of the winter root and leafy vegetables.

Fresh May 11

Due to the cool weather we've had, greens and lettuce varieties are still the dominant seasonal produce. When farmers harvest lettuce, they really must sell it quickly as it has a short shelf life. So enjoy salads this week! Then capitalize on the abundance of greens by freezing for later cooking, juicing or smoothie use. Radishes, turnips, some carrots and beets can be found. Spring onions are still a treat, as are strawberries. Look for green beans, greenhouse tomatoes, sweet potatoes, pecans and herbs.

Artisan producers sell a wide variety of baked goods, cheese, jellies and pickles, cake balls,

Fresh produce selections continue to be dominated by varieties of greens and root vegetables. Now is the peak time to purchase greens for blending into smoothies or cooking for the freezer. This week also look for tatsoi, mizuna,  kale, chard, collards, turnip greens, cabbage, salad greens mix, French breakfast radish, green garlic, carrots, cilantro, rosemary, arugula, hot house tomatoes, onions, lettuce varieties, and pecans.
